The year decides the direction. The month decides the price.
🌿 How a Month Gets Its Element
Each month in BaZi carries its own Earthly Branch and Heavenly Stem, exactly like the pillars in your birth chart. The branches follow the season: spring months lean Wood, summer leans Fire, late summer Earth, autumn Metal, winter Water.
Two details trip up newcomers:
- Months do not start on the 1st. BaZi runs on solar terms, so each month begins somewhere around the 4th to the 8th of the calendar month.
- The year does not start on January 1st, or at Chinese New Year. It starts at Li Chun, the solar term in early February. This is why a birthday in late January or early February can belong to the previous zodiac animal than the one everyone assumed.
Once you know the element of a month, the only question that matters is what that element does to your chart.
⚖️ Supportive Months and Draining Months
Your Day Master is the element at the centre of your chart. Each month either feeds it, drains it, controls it, or gets controlled by it. That relationship is the whole forecast.
- Supportive months: the wind is behind you. Introductions happen without engineering them, decisions land, people say yes faster than you expected.
- Draining months: you are rowing upstream. The work is still good; it simply takes three attempts instead of one. These are excellent months for preparation, terrible months for launches.
- Clash months: the month directly opposes a branch in your chart. Things move whether you wanted them to or not — travel, endings, sudden reshuffles.
None of these are moral categories. A draining month is not bad luck; it is a month where your fuel burns faster. The mistake is not having a hard month. The mistake is scheduling your one big decision inside it.

🎯 Put the Big Decision in the Right Month
Almost everyone has one decision per year that actually matters: the resignation, the launch, the offer, the move, the conversation that changes a relationship's shape.
Run it in a supportive month and it tends to require less force and produce a better outcome — not because the universe rewards obedience, but because you are moving when your own energy, judgement and visibility are highest, and other people can feel it. Force the same decision into a draining month and you get the version of the story where everything technically worked but cost twice as much.
Practically, this means holding a short list:
- One goal. Not five. The month-picking only works when there is a single thing you are timing.
- Two or three candidate months that support your chart.
- A firm date inside one of them, chosen in advance rather than whenever you finally feel brave.
Waiting for the right month is strategy. Waiting to feel ready is avoidance. They look identical from the outside, which is why the calendar has to be decided ahead of time.
🚧 The One or Two Months to Leave Open
Nearly every year contains one or two months where the energy meets your chart at a hard angle — in classical terms, a Heaven-and-Earth clash, where both the stem and the branch of the month oppose one of your pillars.
These months are not disasters. They are eventful. Things that were already loose come off. Plans get rewritten. Travel appears out of nowhere. The correct response is not fear; it is spacing:
- Do not sign anything irreversible if it can wait four weeks.
- Leave slack in the schedule — assume something will need re-doing.
- Handle admin, maintenance and repairs. Clash months are unusually good at forcing you to fix what you had been ignoring.
