How to Read Your Chart

What your free BaZi chart actually shows

BaZi (八字) — also called the Four Pillars of Destiny — is a reading of the exact solar energy present at the moment you were born. The calculator above takes your birth date, time, and gender and returns your chart across four layers: the Four Pillars (Year, Month, Day, Hour), the Five Elements balance, the Ten Gods, and the Luck Pillars. Here is what each layer means, how to read them together, and where to go next once you have your chart.

The Four Pillars

Every BaZi chart has four vertical columns, each made of a Heavenly Stem on top and an Earthly Branch below. The Year Pillar describes your ancestry and the environment you were born into. The Month Pillar describes your formative years, career instincts, and peer relationships. The Day Pillar's top character is your Day Master — your core identity — and the branch below it describes your marriage and private life. Your Day Master

Your Day Master is one of ten elemental archetypes — Yang Wood, Yin Wood, Yang Fire, Yin Fire, Yang Earth, Yin Earth, Yang Metal, Yin Metal, Yang Water, Yin Water. It is the single most important character in your chart. Every other stem, branch, element, and Ten God is read in relation to the Day Master. The Five Elements balance

BaZi works with five elemental energies — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — that produce and control each other in a cycle. The balance chart above counts how strongly each element shows up in your pillars (including hidden stems). A chart with heavy Fire and no Water reads very differently from a chart with heavy Water and no Earth. Your favorable elements are the ones your chart lacks but needs; your unfavorable elements are the ones already in excess. The Ten Gods

The Ten Gods (十神) are relational labels. They take the raw elemental energy of each stem and describe how it behaves around your Day Master — does it support you, drain you, challenge you, control you, or compete with you? This is the layer that makes BaZi useful for modern life. The career Gods (Direct Officer, Seven Killings), the wealth Gods (Direct Wealth, Indirect Wealth), the creative Gods (Output God, Hurting Officer), the support Gods (Resource, Indirect Resource), and the peer Gods (Friend, Rob Wealth) each describe a specific life theme. The calculator labels your Ten Gods inline on the pillars table so you can see immediately where your career, wealth, and relationships live in your chart.

Your 10-Year Luck Pillars

Luck Pillars (大运) are personal 10-year chapters that unfold from a few years after birth. They are derived from your Month Pillar and gender, and each one brings a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch of its own — effectively handing you a different elemental climate every decade. A Luck Pillar heavy in your favorable elements tends to unlock momentum; one heavy in your unfavorable elements tends to demand discipline. Combined with your Annual Pillar (the energy of each zodiac year), Luck Pillars give you timing — a framework for when to launch, when to harvest, and when to quietly rebuild.

How to use this BaZi calculator accurately

The chart above is generated from astronomical solar-term data (Jie Qi), so the math matches any traditional master's chart exactly. What changes accuracy is the quality of your input. A few notes to get the cleanest read.

Enter your true solar birth time, not clock time

BaZi runs on the sun's actual position at your birth longitude. For most people in their country of birth, standard clock time is close enough. But if you were born under daylight saving, near a time-zone border, or at longitudes far from the zone's central meridian, your true solar time may be 15–60 minutes off the clock. That matters because the Hour Pillar changes every two hours — an off-by-one error shifts your entire Hour Pillar. As a rule of thumb, subtract or add roughly 4 minutes per degree of longitude from the time-zone meridian, and remove daylight-saving offsets.

If you don't know your birth hour, choose "Unknown"

A three-pillar BaZi chart — Year, Month, Day — is still a complete and readable chart. You'll have your Day Master, your zodiac animal, your Five Elements balance, and your Luck Pillars. You'll just be missing the private, later-life layer that the Hour Pillar describes. Most people have their birth time documented on their birth certificate or in hospital records; it's worth one phone call to a family member before settling for "Unknown."

The BaZi year starts at Li Chun, not January 1

The BaZi year begins at the solar term Lichun (立春), which falls around February 3–5 each year. If you were born in early January or early February, your BaZi Year Pillar may belong to the previous zodiac year — not the one everyone else was celebrating. This calculator handles the Li Chun boundary automatically, so the year shown here is the correct BaZi year even if it surprises you. Read more on why your zodiac animal might be lying to you.

Reading the chart: what to look at first

1. Your Day Master — the top character of the Day column. Read this first. Everything else is a modifier.
2. Your Five Elements balance — which elements are heavy, which are missing, which are dominating. This gives you your favorable and unfavorable elements.
3. Your Ten Gods — where is your wealth, your career, your creativity, your support? Which are present in your pillars, which are hidden, which are absent?
4. Your current Luck Pillar — the 10-year column highlighted on the Luck Pillars row. What element is it? Is it supporting your Day Master or challenging it?
5. The current Annual Pillar — 2026 is a Fire Horse year, and how it lands on your chart depends entirely on your natal elements.
