Some charts are built to rise inside an organisation. Others are built to make their own way. Here is how to tell which one you are holding before you hand in your notice.
Quick answer: in BaZi, the question “should I work for myself?” is answered by which of the Ten Gods your chart leans on. Charts that lean on The Administrator and The Sage (正官 and 正印) tend to do best inside a structure that recognises them. Charts where The Creator or The Maverick (食神 and 傷官) feed straight into The Steward or The Entrepreneur (正財 and 偏財) tend to earn best from their own skill. Many charts can do both, and then timing decides.
The Two Paths in a BaZi Chart
| Rise inside a structure | Make your own way | |
|---|---|---|
| The stars it leans on | The Administrator (正官), The Sage (正印) | The Creator (食神), The Maverick (傷官), The Entrepreneur (偏財) |
| How money arrives | Through position, title and trust | Through what you make, sell or solve |
| What feeds you | Clear rules, recognition, a ladder that rewards you | Freedom, direct results, your name on the work |
| What drains you | Chaos with no one accountable | Approval chains and someone else’s pace |
Signs Your Chart Is Built to Make Its Own Way
Your output feeds your wealth. When The Creator or The Maverick sits next to The Steward or The Entrepreneur in your chart, your skill turns into money directly. Classical texts call this “output producing wealth” (食傷生財). People with this pattern often earn more per hour on their own than they ever did on a salary.
The Entrepreneur is visible. Indirect Wealth is money that moves: deals, clients, commissions, ventures. A chart that shows it clearly tends to be comfortable with income that rises and falls.
The Maverick is strong. The Maverick questions the rules and improves on them. Inside a strict hierarchy that can read as friction with the boss. Outside it, the same energy becomes your product.
Signs Your Chart Is Built to Rise Inside a Structure
The Administrator and The Sage support each other. Officer feeding Seal (官印相生) is one of the most respected career patterns in BaZi. Responsibility comes to you, and the credentials and backing to carry it come with it. This is the chart of the person who is promoted, trusted and handed the keys.
The Conqueror is held in check. Seven Killings (七殺) is pressure and ambition. When The Creator or The Sage keeps it in check, it turns into command: the person who runs the hard department, or later, their own company at scale.
Neither path is better. A chart built for structure that walks away from it often finds that freedom costs more than it pays. A chart built for its own way that stays put often feels like it is shrinking.
When Both Are Present
Plenty of charts carry both patterns. Then the deciding factor is the season. Your ten-year Luck Pillar may be bringing in the elements of independence right now, or the elements of position and support. The same person can be right to stay in one decade and right to leave in the next. That is what the timing side of this question is about.
Before You Decide: Three Questions
- When you did your best work, who set the terms? If the answer is “I did,” your chart may be telling you something.
- Has money ever come to you directly for something you made? A side project, a client, a sale. That is The Creator feeding The Steward, already at work.
- Is the frustration about the work, or about the structure? If it is the structure, another employer may not fix it. If it is the work, another role might.
And once you leave, the next question is what to build. What should I do after I quit? reads that from the same chart.
