A plain guide to the four kinds of BaZi reading you can buy in English, what each one costs, and how to tell which one fits the question you are actually asking.
Quick answer: a BaZi reading can cost nothing at all or several hundred US dollars. A free calculator shows your chart. An AI-generated report usually costs between $5 and $40. A written reading by a human reader usually costs between $40 and $200. A live one-hour consultation usually costs between $60 and $300, and an established master can charge more. The right one depends less on price than on what you want answered.
Most people who search for a BaZi reading are not shopping for a format. They are carrying a question. Should I leave. Is this the right person. Why has the last decade felt so heavy. The format you choose decides whether that question gets read at all.
The Four Kinds of BaZi Reading, Side by Side
| Kind of reading | What you get | Typical price | How fast | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free calculator | Your Four Pillars, Day Master, Five Elements count and Luck Pillars, with short generic notes | Free | Instant | Seeing your chart for the first time; checking your Day Master |
| AI-generated report | A chart plus several pages of written text produced by software | About $5–$40 | Minutes | A low-cost overview when you have no specific question |
| Written reading by a human reader | A long-form PDF written for your chart and your questions, usually 10–30 pages | About $40–$200 | A few days | A real decision, a life pattern you want explained, something to keep and reread |
| Live consultation | A video or phone session, sometimes with a recording or short written summary | About $60–$300 per hour; more with well-known masters | By appointment | Talking a situation through and asking follow-up questions in real time |
Price ranges are what English-language BaZi services typically charged in autumn 2026, in US dollars. They are a guide, not a quote.
What Does a Free BaZi Calculator Give You?
A good free calculator turns your birth date, time and place into the eight characters of your chart. You see your Day Master, the balance of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, and the order of your ten-year Luck Pillars.
That is real information, and for many people it is enough to start. What a calculator cannot do is weigh one part of the chart against another. It will tell you that you have little Water. It will not tell you whether that matters for the job offer on your table.
Start here before you pay for anything. If the calculator asks for your birth time and place, and explains what changes when the time is unknown, that is a good sign.
What Do AI-Generated BaZi Reports Give You?
AI reports are fast, cheap and consistent. They take the same chart a calculator produces and add pages of readable text: your personality, your strengths, the themes of your current decade.
Their limit is that they describe the chart in parts. Each section is written from one element or one pillar at a time, so two sections can quietly contradict each other. They rarely notice when a birth time is uncertain, and they cannot hold your actual question in mind while reading the whole chart.
An AI report is a sensible choice when you are curious and have no decision riding on the answer.
What Does a Written Reading by a Human Reader Give You?
A human reader looks at the whole chart first and decides what matters most in it. That judgment is the part software does not do well. Two people with the same Day Master can have very different charts, because the season of birth, the other pillars and the current Luck Pillar change how that Day Master behaves.
A written reading also answers the question you bring. If you ask about a career change, the reader looks at your career and wealth stars, your current decade and the next two years, and writes to that. You get something you can reread when the year turns.
Expect to wait a few days. Expect the reader to ask for your birth time and place, and to tell you how confident they are in it.
What Does a Live Consultation Give You?
A live session is a conversation. You can react, add context and ask the next question straight away. That suits people who think out loud, or whose situation has many moving parts.
The trade-off is that a conversation is harder to revisit. Ask whether the session is recorded or followed by notes, and how much of the hour goes to reading your chart versus explaining the system.
Is an AI BaZi Reading as Good as a Human One?
For learning your chart, an AI report is often good enough. For a decision, it usually is not.
The difference is not accuracy of calculation. Software and people use the same calendar and arrive at the same eight characters. The difference is interpretation: deciding which of many patterns in a chart is the one that answers your question, and saying so plainly. That is still a human skill.
How to Tell a Good BaZi Reading From a Weak One: Six Checks
- It asks for your birth time and place. The hour pillar depends on local solar time, and the month pillar depends on the solar terms. A service that only asks for your birthday is reading part of your chart.
- It shows you the chart. You should be able to see the four pillars it is reading from, so you can check them against a calculator.
- It explains its reasoning. “You may feel pressure at work this year because the year’s element controls your Day Master” is a reading. “Be careful at work this year” is a slogan.
- It talks about weather, not verdicts. BaZi describes seasons and tendencies. Be wary of anyone who guarantees money, health, a marriage or a legal outcome.
- The price and delivery are clear before you pay. You should know the length, the format, the turnaround and whether follow-up questions are included.
- Nothing else is for sale inside the reading. A reading that ends by prescribing an amulet, a crystal or a costly ritual is selling something other than an interpretation.
Which Kind Should You Choose?
- You are curious and new to BaZi: start with a free calculator, then read about your Day Master.
- You want a quick overview at low cost: an AI-generated report is fine.
- You are facing a decision, or a pattern you want explained: a written reading by a human reader gives you an answer you can reread.
- You want to talk it through: a live consultation, ideally one that is recorded or followed by notes.
- You are buying for someone else: a written reading travels best as a gift, because the person can read it in their own time.
